Every year in spring and in autumn, there is a week-long Arbeitsgemeinschaft (study group) in Oberwolfach with about 45-50 participants. The idea of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft is to learn by giving one of the lectures on the topic under study. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft is open to everybody, participation is by application to the organisers.

Title of the next Arbeitsgemeinschaft: Quantum Ergodicity
Organisers: Ulrich Bunke, Regensburg
Stephane Nonnenmacher, Gif-sur-Yvette
Roman Schubert, Bristol
Date: 9 - 14 October, 2011
(Please note that departure is on Friday late afternoon because of a meeting of the Oberwolfach board on Saturday)
Deadline for application: 15 August 2011

If you know a graduate student or post doc who might be interested, please be so kind and draw her/his attention to this Oberwolfach Seminar. Participation in these seminars is by application. As usual, the institute offers board and lodging free of charge. By the support of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation, travel expenses can be reimbursed up to 200 EUR in average per person. Participants can ask for travel support during their stay in Oberwolfach at the guest office against copy of travel receipts. Additionally, participation of young Japanese mathematicians can be sponsored by the grant "Heizaemon Honda Scholars". For more information on grants, please see our homepage http://www.mfo.de/for-guest-researchers/prepare-your-stay/jams-grant

Applications including full name, postal address, e-mail address, present position, university, name of supervisor of Ph.D. thesis, a short summary of previous work and interest should be sent preferably by e-mail (.ps or .pdf file) to

We are pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation awarded again a grant DMS-1049268 to the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach for support of the project "US Junior Oberwolfach Fellows" from 2011 to 2016.

This grant enables the MFO to support the participation of outstanding young scientists from US universities/institutes in every week-long Oberwolfach meeting (e.g. graduate students, postdocs, tenure track holder).

Travel expenses (US airlines only) for these US Junior Oberwolfach Fellows can be covered up to 550 US-Dollar (about 400 Euro - depending on the dollar rate). The internal costs for accommodation and meals at Oberwolfach will be covered by the NSF as well.

More information can be found at:

The focus of "Research in Pairs" (RiP) is to bring together small groups of researchers to carry out joint research in the stimulating atmosphere of the Oberwolfach Institute. Projects from all areas of mathematics can be supported by this programme, in particular, interdisciplinary cooperation is encouraged.

The stay of a research "pair", which means at least two and at most four people, can last between two weeks and three months. It is required that not all come from the same place. The Institute will provide office space, accommodation (full board and lodging), and an allowance for incidental expenses. Travel expenses can be reimbursed only in exceptional cases.

Applications can be made any time, preferably around six months before the planned stay. Due to many applications for the months May - September we recommend to consider also other periods for your stay, if possible. Decision making takes usually about six weeks.

Applicants should submit a short description (in English) of the joint project, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and dates for the proposed visit.

Applications should be sent to the Director of the Institute (preferably by e-mail).

We are pleased to inform you that the postdoctoral programme "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows" (OWLF) has been prolongated and is now included in the regular scientific programme at Oberwolfach.

The focus of this programme is to support outstanding young mathematical researchers in the realization of a proposed research project. The MFO provides full financing, including board and lodging, and the possibility to invite co-workers for a shorter period.

The institute offers an excellent infrastructure embedded in an international atmosphere which is ideal for concentrated work during the stay at Oberwolfach. An application as an Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellow can be submitted at any time.

Applications can also be arranged through an application within the European Post-Doctoral Institute EPDI.
