Every year in spring and in autumn, there is a weekly Arbeitsgemeinschaft (study group) in Oberwolfach with about 45 participants. The idea of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft is to learn by giving one of the lectures on the topic under study. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft is open to everybody, participation is by application to the organisers.
| Title of the next Arbeitsgemeinschaft: | Minimal Surfaces |
| Organisers: | William H. Meeks, Amherst Matthias Weber, Bloomington |
| Date: | October 4th - October 9th, 2009 |
| Deadline for application: | August 15th, 2009 |

2. Oberwolfach Vorlesung by Prof. Friedrich Hirzebruch |
back to table of contents |
The annual Oberwolfach Vorlesung is a public lecture with duration of about one hour at the MFO. It takes place after the general meeting of the Gesellschaft fuer mathematische Forschung e.V. (GMF) on a Saturday in October. (The GMF is the running society of the MFO; please note that its general meeting is NOT public.)
We are pleased to announce the next Oberwolfach Vorlesung:
- Prof. Friedrich Hirzebruch (Bonn)
"Characteristic Classes in Topology and Algebraic Geometry"
Saturday, October 10th, 2009
begin at 5:30 pm at the MFO
Because of the restricted place, we kindly like to ask you to register by letter or email to
. Please note that we cannot offer board and lodging for this event at the MFO. Instead, we recommend the nearby hotels to the interested participants.
3. Oberwolfach Seminars for graduate students in autumn 2009 |
back to table of contents |
Oberwolfach Seminars are not regular workshops, but - like summer schools - are aimed at graduate students and post docs. In October 18th-24th and November 22nd-28th, 2009, there are 4 Oberwolfach Seminars at the MFO:
- The Erlangen Program, Myths and Realities:
Geometry and Group Theory, 1870-1920 - Semiparametric and Nonparametric Regression
- New Trends in Algorithms for Real Algebraic Geometry
- Computational Fluid Dynamics
Further information is available on our homepage at http://www.mfo.de/cgi-bin/path?programme/seminars
If you know a graduate student or post doc who might be interested, we would appreciate if you would draw her/his attention to this Oberwolfach Seminar. Participation in these seminars is by application. As usual, the institute offers board and lodging free of charge. By the support of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation, travel expenses can be reimbursed up to 200 Euro in average per person. Participants can ask for travel support during their stay in Oberwolfach at the guest office against copy of travel receipts. Additionally, participation of young Japanese mathematicians can be sponsored by the grant "Heizaemon Honda Scholars". See our homepage http://www.mfo.de/cgi-bin/path?news for more information on grants, please.
Applications including full name and address (including e-mail address), present position, university, name of supervisor of Ph.D. thesis, a short summary of previous work and interest should be sent as hard copy or by e-mail (.ps or .pdf file) to
4. Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows: Prolongation |
back to table of contents |
We are pleased to inform you that the postdoctoral programme "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows" has recently been prolongated and is now included in the regular scientific programme at Oberwolfach.
The focus of this programme is to support outstanding young mathematical researchers in the realization of a proposed research project. The MFO provides full financing, including board and lodging, and the possibility to invite co-workers for a shorter period.
The institute offers an excellent infrastructure embedded in an international environment which is ideal for concentrated work during the stay at Oberwolfach. An application as an Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellow can be submitted any time.
Applications can also be arranged through an application within the European Post-Doctoral Institut EPDI.
More information can be found at http://www.mfo.de/cgi-bin/path?programme/fellows
5. Renovation measures of the guest house |
back to table of contents |
At the moment, we are renovating the guest house and successively all guest rooms of the MFO. This produces some noise and dust and will proceed until the end of the year. We take care that the scientific programmes will not be disturbed by this measure.
We hope for your understanding and apologize for any inconveniences.
6. Deadline for proposals |
back to table of contents |
The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach workshops in 2011 is end of July 2009. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2009.
The next deadline to apply for an Oberwolfach Mini-Workshop is January 22th, 2010 (for the Mini-Workshops in August 22nd-28th, 2010). Applications for a "Research in Pairs" stay at Oberwolfach can be made any time, preferably around six months before the planned stay.
