1. Oberwolfach Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deninger-Faltings on "Topological Robotics" in October 2010

Every year in spring and in autumn, there is a week-long Arbeitsgemeinschaft (study group) in Oberwolfach with about 45 participants. The idea of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft is to learn by giving one of the lectures on the topic under study. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft is open to everybody, participation is by application to the organisers.

Oberwolfach Prize 2010 for Junior European Mathematicians

The Oberwolfach Foundation awards in cooperation with the MFO a prize for excellent achievements in:

Analysis and Applied Mathematics

The prize amounts to Euro 10.000. Candidates should be mathematicians from Europe, with Ph.D./Dr. degree received not more than 10 years ago, and must be nominated. Proposals should contain a description of the scientific achievements, curriculum vitae and publication list of the candidate. We request all European senior scientists in analysis and applied mathematics to make proposals before September 1st, 2010, to:

5. Oberwolfach Vorlesung by Prof. Rupert Klein

The annual Oberwolfach Vorlesung is a public lecture of about one hour taking place at the MFO after the general meeting of the Gesellschaft fuer mathematische Forschung e.V. (The GMF is the running society of the MFO; please note that its general meeting is NOT public.)

If you know a graduate student or post doc who might be interested, please be so kind and draw her/his attention to this Oberwolfach Seminar. Participation in these seminars is by application. As usual, the institute offers board and lodging free of charge. By the support of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation, travel expenses can be reimbursed up to 200 EUR in average per person. Participants can ask for travel support during their stay in Oberwolfach at the guest office against copy of travel receipts. Additionally, participation of young Japanese mathematicians can be sponsored by the grant "Heizaemon Honda Scholars". 7. Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows

We are pleased to inform you that the postdoctoral programme "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows" has been prolongated and is now included in the regular scientific programme at Oberwolfach.

The focus of this programme is to support outstanding young mathematical researchers in the realization of a proposed research project. The MFO provides full financing, including board and lodging, and the possibility to invite co-workers for a shorter period.

The institute offers an excellent infrastructure embedded in an international atmosphere which is ideal for concentrated work during the stay at Oberwolfach. An application as an Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellow can be submitted at any time.

Applications can also be arranged through an application within the European Post-Doctoral Institute EPDI.

8. Oberwolfach Workshops 2012: deadline for proposals etc.

The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach Workshops in 2012 is end of July 2010. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2010.

The fixed weeks and deadlines to apply for an Oberwolfach Mini-Workshop in 2011 are

April 24th - 30th, 2011 (deadline for proposals: September 24th, 2010)
August 21st - 27th, 2011 (deadline for proposals: January 21st, 2011)

 

Applications for a "Research in Pairs" stay at Oberwolfach can be made any time, preferably around six months before the planned stay.

9. MiMa: New museum of minerals and mathematics in Oberwolfach

We are pleased to inform you that a new museum of minerals and mathematics (MiMa) has opened in Oberwolfach in January 2010:

We like to invite all guest researchers at the MFO to visit this new museum MiMa which is a cooperation with the municipality of Oberwolfach and with the "Verein der Freunde von Mineralien und Bergbau Oberwolfach e.V." ("friends of minerals association").

In particluar, the maths section of MiMa hosts interactive exhibits of the award-winning exhibition IMAGINARY, developed for the German Year of Mathematics 2008 and new exhibits by the MFO. A focus is put on symmetry and cristallography.
