Oberwolfach Seminar: Mathematics of Photonic Crystals

Date:
October 12th - October 18th, 2008
Organizers:
Willy Dörfler, Karlsruhe
Michael Plum, Karlsruhe
Guido Schneider, Stuttgart
Lutz Weis, Karlsruhe
On behalf of the Graduiertenkolleg 1294 at the University of Karlsruhe.
Programme:

Propagation of electromagnetic waves in structured materials at nano scales is an important topic for the construction of materials with completely new properties.

The questions concern the computation of the bandstrucure of the crystal to detect and forecast the allowed or prohibited transmissions, to find new materials with prescribed band gaps, to predict the consequences of local dotings, recover crystal properties from scattered data and study the behaviour of wave packets in crystals and wave guides.

The mathematical tools to deal with these problems range from analysis to numerical methods and include the following topics:

Furthermore, the workshop will include practical exercises and short communications on recent results and developments.

Prerequisites:
Will be announced later.
