1. Measures concerning the pandemic
We were pleased that the institute could re-open after the first wave in June 2020 and that we could host several workshops and research fellows since then. Using our enhanced video conference tools, we can realize hybrid workshops with 10-30 participants in person and about the same number of online participants. Usually, a workshop has 50 participants, but the smaller size of the group creates in turn a very intense working atmosphere.
Some activities could not be realized as a hybrid workshop, but as a small group meeting of participants working on the subject of the workshop at the MFO. In some other cases, the workshop was changed to a pure online format.
The MFO has developed new hygiene measures for hand desinfection, accommodation, lecture halls, air cleaning and individual meal services to make a research stay at Oberwolfach as safe as possible.
At the moment there is a second wave of the pandemic in Europe, but we could still realize meetings and research activities at the MFO until now. In view of starting vaccinations we strongly hope that travel and meeting restrictions with regard to the pandemic will be reduced during 2021 such that most of the participants of activities can attend in person, at least in the second half of 2021.
Detailed information on the measures is provided at the following links:
- General description of all measures (please check also because of travel restrictions/quarantine rules!),
- Detailed information on the hybrid workshops
- New hygiene concept
2. Oberwolfach Program 2022
We are pleased that the schedule of workshops and other activities in 2022 is published now.
3. Call for applications: Oberwolfach Research Fellows and small collaborations until end of June 2021
In order to react to the current crisis the MFO offers in the period from July 1st to December 18, 2020, the possibility to apply for an Oberwolfach Research Fellowship. Single researchers or groups up to four people can apply for a stay between two weeks and three months. Junior researchers and post-docs can apply for full scholarships and travel support. Because of the big success, we have prolongated this program until end of June 2021! More details can be found at our website on the Oberwolfach Research Fellows.
Due to worldwide travel restrictions in view of the corona pandemic the MFO has limited additional capacity for small collaborations among groups at different locations in specific weeks before June 2021.
To bridge unsurmountable travel restrictions the MFO invites applications from researchers who want to organize small scale, week-long interactive mini-workshops or seminars jointly between the MFO and their own institution. For example, a group of 4-10 researchers able to travel to Oberwolfach may team up with a group of similar size at an institution far away to run an activity combining intense personal interaction locally in each of the two places with a certain number of joint zoom lectures and discussions. Applications with a short description of the research activity proposed and a list of proposed participants at the MFO and the other institution should be sent to fellows@mfo.de.
4. Call for applications: Tandem Workshops in 2021 with MATRIX and RIMS
The Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach (MFO), Germany and the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University, Japan invite proposals for a tandem-workshop taking place simultaneously in a hybrid format at MFO and RIMS in the week of 5-11 September 2021: www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/tandem-workshop-2021-mfo-rims. Please send proposals (pdf-files) by email to both or one of the directors of MFO and RIMS prior to the deadline 15 January 2021.
The Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach (MFO), Germany and the Australian Mathematical Research Institute MATRIX invite proposals for a tandem workshop taking place simultaneously in a hybrid format at MATRIX and MFO in the week of 5-11 September 2021: www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/tandem-workshop-2021-matrix-mfo. Please send proposals (pdf-files) by email to the director of MFO and.or upload to the MATRIX website prior to the deadline 15 January 2021.
5. Call for applications: Oberwolfach Arbeitsgemeinschaften in 2021
Every year in spring and in autumn, there are week-long Arbeitsgemeinschaften (study groups) in Oberwolfach with about 50 participants. The idea of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft is to learn by giving one of the lectures on the topic under study. The Arbeitsgemeinschaft is open to everybody, participation is by application to the organizers via ag@mfo.de. See our webpage on the Arbeitsgemeinschaft for details how to apply. There will be 3 study groups in 2021:
Derived Galois Deformation Rings and Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups

7. Call for applications: Banach Center - Oberwolfach Graduate Seminars 2021
Because of the big success of the first Banach Center - Oberwolfach Graduate Seminar in November 2019 we have planned in cooperation with the Banach Center two seminars in 2020, taking place at the Mathematical Research and Conference Center of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Będlewo.
Unfortunately, the two planned seminars in 2020 could not be realized because of the pandemic, but we are planning to shift them to winter 2021/22. As soon as the dates are fixed, information will be available on our website. Please check in January 2021 again at www.mfo.de/www/schedule/2021/training
8. Call for applications: Oberwolfach Workshops 2023
The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach Workshops in 2023 is end of July 2021. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2021. See also the description of the program and our guidelines for proposals of an Oberwolfach Workshop.
Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Director Prof. Gerhard Huisken, via proposals@mfo.de.
9. Call for applications: Mini-Workshops 2021-2022
The fixed weeks and deadlines to apply for an Oberwolfach Mini-Workshop in 2021-2022 are
Dates of Mini-Workshops | Deadlines for proposals |
05 Sep - 11 Sep 2021 | 01 March 2021 |
05 Dec - 11 Dec 2021 | 01 March 2021 |
13 Feb - 19 Feb 2022 | 18 July 2021 |
20 Mar - 26 Mar 2022 | 18 July 2021 |
02 Oct - 08 Oct 2022 | 03 April 2022 |
27 Nov - 03 Dec 2022 | 03 April 2022 |
Please note that the first week 05 Sep - 11 Sep 2021 is also reserved for our tandem workshops which will have priority!
On the other hand, because of the pandemic one can expect that the MFO will have more free accommodation capacity than usual, in particular in the first half of the year 2021. Thus we probably can be more flexible with the realization of a date different from the weeks given above. If you have additional suggestions (or restrictions) concerning the date of the mini-workshop you are applying for, please inform us in your proposal.
Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Director Prof. Gerhard Huisken, via proposals@mfo.de. See also our guidelines for proposals above.
10. Call for applications: Oberwolfach Seminars 2022
The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach Seminars in 2022 is end of July 2021. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2021. See also our description of the seminar program (section "Annual decision of the seminar program").
Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Vice Director Prof. Matthias Hieber, via proposals@mfo.de.
