1. Measures concerning the pandemic

Although vaccinations are now being used in many countries, we are still faced with the pandemic. On the other hand, the MFO is open since end of June 2020 again and in the meantime we could gather a lot of experience with necessary modifications and adjustments. Please read our up-to-date infos (in particular, travel restrictions, quarantine rules etc.) at www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/measures-concerning-coronavirus-covid-19.

In agreement with the workshop organizers, the MFO realizes workshops in a hybrid format (mixed personal/online). The number of possible on-site and online participants depends on the current pandemic status and international travel restrictions. According to the "Oberwolfach spirit", our emphasis is on participation in person. In 2020-21, most hybrid workshops covered a spectrum of 15 - 40 on-site and 40 - 15 online participants. In this way cancellations or "fully online" formats of workshops could be almost completely avoided since June 2020 - also in some weeks where the pandemic development was strong. Details on the concept of hybrid workshops can be found at: www.mfo.de/scientific-program/meetings/meetings-in-hybrid-format.

In 2020, the MFO has introduced strong hygiene measures for hand desinfection, accommodation, lecture halls, air cleaning and individual meal services to make a research stay at Oberwolfach as safe as possible: www.mfo.de/for-guest-researchers/during-your-stay/hygiene-infection-prevention.

5. Call for applications: Oberwolfach Research Fellows

www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/research-in-pairs-becomes-oberwolfach-research-fellows

"Research in Pairs" becomes "Oberwolfach Research Fellows". The new program provides more flexibility to senior and junior researchers.

In 2020 the MFO started to offer the possibility to apply for an Oberwolfach Research Fellowship (OWRF) within the existing programs "Research in Pairs" and "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows". Facing the challenges of the corona crisis for the scientific world, this offer was meant to provide a perspective for scientists, in particular for junior scientists. With its enhanced flexibility the program proved to be a great success and we received many applications. In 2021 it was therefore decided that OWRF should become the new umbrella format for longer term research stays in Oberwolfach. Thus, the former "Research in Pairs" program evolves to the new "Oberwolfach Research Fellowship", including the possibility for junior researchers to apply for an "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellowship". Please find all the information on the program and how to apply on our website for longer term research stays: www.mfo.de/scientific-program/longer-term/longer-term-researchers

6. Call for networking activities in 2024

www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/call-for-networking-activities

MFO calls for proposals for Workshops with a distinguished networking character. This is a new category of Workshops within the MFO program whose aim is to enhance gender and diversity, and to strengthen the impact of minorities in mathematics. Invited are proposals for such activities in the MFO Workshop program (which also includes half workshops) and in the Mini-Workshop program.

The proposals for such networking Workshops or networking Mini-Workshops should describe a specific research subject as usual - see our proposal guidelines for more details on this aspect - while also providing a detailed concept for the proposed networking and possible mentoring activities. In particular, please specify in which way you would like to give preference to the selection of speakers and/or participants in terms of gender and diversity and indicate a preliminary list of proposed participants.

The deadlines and submitting procedures are the same as for the traditional Workshops and Mini-Workshops (see proposal guidelines). The Scientific Committee will discuss and decide on this new category of networking activities based on scientific quality and the networking concept at the same time but separately from the traditional formats.

Further measures to promote equality and diversity at the Institute can be found in our EDI policy.

7. Call for proposals: Oberwolfach Workshops 2024

The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach Workshops in 2024 is end of July 2022. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2022. See also the description of the program and our guidelines for proposals of an Oberwolfach Workshop. www.mfo.de/scientific-program/meetings/proposal-guidelines

Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Director Prof. Gerhard Huisken, via proposals@mfo.de.

8. Call for proposals: Mini-Workshops 2022-2023

www.mfo.de/scientific-program/meetings/mini-workshop

The fixed weeks and deadlines to apply for an Oberwolfach Mini-Workshop in 2022-2023 are

Dates of Mini-Workshops Deadlines for proposals
02 Oct - 08 Oct 2022 03 April 2022
27 Nov - 03 Dec 2022 03 April 2022
26 Feb - 04 March 2023 04 September 2022
29 Oct - 04 Nov 2023 07 May 2023
26 Nov 02 Dec 2023 07 May 2023
17 Dec - 23 Dec 2023 07 May 2023

As an option, a proposal for a Mini-Workshopt can contain an additional component of online-participants (not more than the number of on-site participants) such that the Mini-Workshop will be realized in a hybrid format. This can make sense in case of a strong scientific cooperation between the proposed on-site participants with a group of international researchers elsewhere who will not be able to travel (e.g., because of pandemic restrictions). In this case, the proposal should also contain a concept and schedule of the activities with regard to the cooperation over different time zones.

For each of these weeks the decision about the Mini-Workshops takes place about 3 weeks after the corresponding deadline for application, which is about half a year before the week of the Mini-Workshop.

Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Director Prof. Dr. Gerhard Huisken, via proposals@mfo.de. See also our guidelines for proposals above.

9. Call for proposals: Oberwolfach Seminars 2023

The deadline for proposals of Oberwolfach Seminars in 2023 is end of July 2022. The decision on the proposals by the Oberwolfach Scientific Committee is scheduled to the end of October 2022. See also our description of the seminar program (section "Annual decision of the seminar program"). www.mfo.de/scientific-program/meetings/oberwolfach-seminars

Applications should be sent as pdf-files to the Vice Director Prof. Dr. Matthias Hieber, via proposals@mfo.de.

10. Tandem-Workshops in 2023

The MFO has successfully organized hybrid Tandem-Workshops with the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), Kyoto University, Japan and the Australian Mathematical Research Institute MATRIX in 2021 and 2022.

We plan to organize Tandem-Workshops in 2023 again and have reserved free capacity in the weeks 17 - 23 and 24 - 30 September 2023. The corresponding call for proposals will be published soon, please check our website and news regularly. The deadline will be in summer 2022 (end of July or August).

11. Oberwolfach Prize 2022 and John Todd Award 2022

The Oberwolfach Prize is financed by the Oberwolfach Foundation and awarded in cooperation with the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach to young mathematicians: www.mfo.de/outreach-media/prizes/oberwolfach-prize

The prize is awarded approximately every three years for excellent achievements in changing fields of mathematics. The Scientific Committee of the Gesellschaft für mathematische Forschung e.V. is involved in selecting the prize winners from the nominations. The Oberwolfach Prize comes with an award of Euro 10,000. The field for the next Oberwolfach Prize 2022 will be Algebra and Number Theory.

The John Todd Award is awarded about every three years by the Oberwolfach Foundation and the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach to young excellent mathematicians working in numerical analysis: www.mfo.de/outreach-media/prizes/john-todd-award

The Scientific Committee of the Gesellschaft für mathematische Forschung e.V. is involved in selecting the fellows from the nominations. The John Todd Award comes with an award of Euro 1,000.

The call for nominations for both prizes is scheduled to spring 2022. Please check our website and news regularly. The deadline for nominations will be in summer 2022.

12. MaRDI consortium has started

www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/mardi-consortium-has-started

The Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach is part of the "Mathematical Research Data Initiative" (MaRDI) consortium. Beginning in October 2021 the consortium will be funded over a period of 5 years.

The MaRDI consortium is coordinated by the Berlin Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS). It currently includes 23 other partners (universities and research institutes, scientific infrastructure facilities, clusters of excellence as well as the German Mathematicians Association DMV and the European Mathematical Society EMS).

MaRDI is one of several consortia within the initiative "Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur" (NFDI, National Research Data Infrastructure), which is intended to systematically make valuable data stocks from science and research accessible for sustainable use. According to the the so-called FAIR-principles, data should be easily findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable. At the moment, however, a lot of the data is only available locally, project-related and often only for a limited period of time. The consortia shall develop strategies tailored to their scientific disciplines in order to establish a research data management according to the FAIR-principles. The MFO will mainly provide a personal contact point for the mathematical community and as such collect feedback by the community directly and via surveys.

13. Application process for 9th Heidelberg Laureate Forum has begun

www.mfo.de/about-the-institute/news/application-9th-hlf

Young researchers in computer science and mathematics from all over the world can apply for one of the 200 coveted spots to participate in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), an annual networking event.

The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the opportunity to interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. Traditionally, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany. If meeting in person is not safely possible, a digital alternative will be developed that creates spaces for effective, sustainable interaction.

The application period for the 9th HLF runs from November 11, 2021, until February 11, 2022. Young researchers at all phases of their careers (Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD or Postdoc) are encouraged to complete and submit their applications by February 11 (midnight at the dateline) via the following link: http://application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

The 9th HLF will take place from September 18 to 23, 2022 (with young researcher registration on September 17).
