Library Extension 2006/2007

Grant from the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and VolkswagenStiftung

On Saturday, May 5, 2007, the dedication ceremony of the enlargement of the library building took place. The extension measures had become necessary since otherwise our library's capacity would have been reached within the next 3-4 years. With the enlargement we are able to provide new capacity for about the next 20 years, in order to maintain and increase our library's present quality and inventory.

To ensure that the working conditions for the mathematicians are not facing any limits in the future, both, the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and the VolkswagenStiftung, allocated the sum of 408.000 Euro each (in total 816.000 Euro) to the MFO for the extension of the library building. The necessary purchase of additional area around the institute has been financed by the Oberwolfach Foundation and the Förderverein with the additional sum of 84.000 Euro, the larger part of this sum coming from the donation of Ms Rosemary Lonergan in honor of the mathematician John Todd. We are deeply indebted to all who made this project possible.

The extension with its long front of windows viewing the valley, its work places inviting to do research and the beautiful wooden shelves  has been very well accomplished. The work places have been accepted right away, even prior to completion, and all our guests praise the inspiring atmosphere of the building.

Together with the extension measures a new office for our library staff has been integrated in the front part of the building. Only separated by a glass wall a free sight over the complete length of the building is ensured and our library staff can be easily contacted if any support is needed.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Joachim Heinze for this renewed support by Springer.
