Research in Pairs

The focus of "Research in Pairs" (RiP) is to bring together small groups of researchers to carry out joint research in the stimulating atmosphere of the Oberwolfach Institute. Projects from all areas of mathematics can be supported by this program, in particular, interdisciplinary cooperation is encouraged.

The stay of a research "pair", which means at least two and at most four people, can last between two weeks and one month (in exceptional cases up to three months). It is required that not all come from the same place. The Institute will provide office space, accommodation (full board and lodging) in our newly renovated large RiP-appartments, and an allowance for incidental expenses. Travel expenses can be reimbursed only in exceptional cases. The Institute wishes to increase the number of female participants. Female mathematicians are strongly encouraged to apply.

It is also possible that 2-4 workshop participants (who are already invited and have accepted) apply for a 1-2 week prolongation of their stay after the workshop as a RiP group.

Applications can be made any time, preferably around six months before the planned stay. Due to many applications for the months May - September we recommend to consider also other periods for your stay, if possible. Decision making takes usually about six weeks. Please note that in case of a positive decision the dates for the RiP stay have to be fixed together with the Oberwolfach administration according to the free capacity available (as usual, arrival should be on Sunday and departure on Friday or Saturday). The RiP stay should be realized within one year after the submission of the proposal.

Applicants should submit a short description (in English) of the joint project including a project title, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and dates for the proposed visit.

Please also include the classification (primary and secondary), according to the latest Mathematics Subject Classification Scheme used by MathSciNet and Zentralblatt.

Applications should be sent to the Vice Director of the Institute, preferably by e-mail to, with attachments in pdf format.

Lists of the Researchers in Pairs

After the RiP research stay every group should publish a short report of 1-2 pages on the MFO website.

Please also note that, starting in 2007, the MFO publishes the series Oberwolfach Preprints (OWP), which mainly contains research results related to a longer stay in Oberwolfach. In particular, this concerns the RiP-Program.

We are grateful to the VolkswagenStiftung which supported the RiP program from 1995 to 2000. Since 2001, it is financed within the regular budget of the MFO.
