Gesellschaft für Mathematische Forschung e.V.

Legal Status

As a legal corporation, the MFO gGmbH has a single associate: The Gesellschaft für Mathematische Forschung e.V. (GMF). The GMF is a non-profit society (gemeinnütziger eingetragener Verein, Vereinsregistereintragung VR 573, Amtsgericht Wolfach) and was founded in Freiburg on June 17th, 1959, in order to set up a legal representation and a scientific backing of the institute (see the minutes of the foundation and the founder members).

Funding

The GMF is the legal owner of the site and of the buildings of the MFO which were generously donated to the GMF by the VolkswagenStiftung in 1988. As the GMF has no own resources, the maintenance of the buildings has to be financed by other means. GMF and MFO would like to thank cordially the local state of Baden-Württemberg who has supported the main part of this maintenance in the past. We are also very grateful to the Förderverein and Oberwolfach Stiftung for essential funding of maintenance. Moreover, we would like to thank cordially the Klaus-Tschira-Stiftung and the VolkswagenStiftung for supporting the library extension of the MFO in 2006.

Statutes

The statutes of the MFO and the GMF contain the follwing aims, to be achieved in an international scope:

1. The promotion of research in mathematics (Förderung der mathematischen Forschung)
2. The intensification of scientific collaboration (Stärkung der wissenschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit)
3. The intensification of education and training in mathematics and related areas (Stärkung der Fortbildung in der Mathematik und ihren Grenzgebieten)
4. The promotion of young scientists (Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses)

Members and Head of the Society

The GMF has about 70 personal members (traditionally, the members of the scientific board also become members of the society), as well as three institutional members: The Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung (DMV), the Gesellschaft für angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik (GAMM), and the Förderverein des Mathematischen Forschungsinstituts Oberwolfach.
