(July 28, 2025) The two books present the lecture notes of the Oberwolfach Seminars on "Stochastic Geophysical Fluid Dynamics" (vol. 55) and "Variational and Information Flows in Machine Learning and Optimal Transport" (vol. 56) given in fall 2022 and 2023.
International Cooperative Research
The Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics) is an international research centre situated in the German Black Forest. Leading experts from all over the world meet at the Institute in order to pursue their research activities, to discuss recent developments in their field with others, and to generate new ideas. The Institute is a member of the Leibniz Association and is funded jointly by the German federal government and the state governments. Read more about the Institute...
Key Information for Visitors
Please check our information for invited researchers regarding registration, check-in and check-out, travel information and further practical issues. We also provide an overview on the facilities you can use during your stay.

Oberwolfach Services
The MFO publishes summaries of all meetings in the series Oberwolfach Reports. The Oberwolfach Preprints mainly contain research results related to a longer stay in Oberwolfach. Snapshots of modern mathematics from Oberwolfach explain mathematical ideas in an accessible and understandable way for non-academic readers. The Library Catalogue provides information on books and printed journals available from the Institute's library. Scientists, lecturers, and science journalists may also find our online photo database helpful.
News
(July 22, 2025) Edited by Maria Remenyi and Volker Remmert, the volume brings together contributions by historians of science, mathematicians and historians of mathematics. The authors examine the evolving conference traditions in Oberwolfach between 1945 and 1960.
(July 18, 2025) The newsletter will inform you on the latest news and activities of the MFO, in particular with regard to open calls and upcoming scientific events at the Institute.
(June 16, 2025) On Thursday, 7 June, construction work began at the institute to expand the dining hall. We are making every effort to minimize any disruptions and to ensure that the workshop program continues smoothly and without compromise.
(April 22, 2025) In cooperation with the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach the Oberwolfach Foundation calls for nominations for the Oberwolfach Prize 2025. The prize is endowed with 10,000 € and is awarded to early-career researchers with outstanding achievements in analysis and applied mathematics. We invite all experienced researchers in the field to submit nominations before 1 August 2025 to the director of the institute.
(April 22, 2025) In cooperation with the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach the Oberwolfach Foundation calls for nominations for this year's John Todd Award. The John Todd Award is endowed with 1,000 € and recognizes early-career scientists with excellent achievements in numerical analysis. We invite all experienced researchers in the field to submit nominations before 1 August 2025 to the director of the institute.
(April 6, 2025) Convex polytopes are geometric objects that look deceptively simple. They occur everywhere in mathematics and have practical applications in everyday life – like organizing your grocery shopping list. In this snapshot of modern mathematics from Oberwolfach, written by Michael Joswig, you get into contact with a long-standing, unsolved question in mathematics, which you can explore interactively.
